 Mission Statement

The Mission of the United States Middle School Basketball Association is to provide a safe environment where middle school boys and girls can compete for a National Championship each year against the champions from cities around America. This competitive program is also designed to build positive character traits, such as accountability and teamwork through basketball. The Association goal is to create a motivated student out of every student athlete through strict academic and behavior codes enforced by the governing body.

History

The United States Middle School Basketball Association is the brainchild of NYC Middle School Basketball League and its committee members Mike Connors, Teddy Rivera and Earl Menard. The committee wants to provide a platform where Middle School Basketball Championship teams across America can compete for a National Championship in the same way Little League Baseball captivates our nation every year. The NYCMSBL was formed in 1998 when two Bronx Middle School teachers Mike Connors and Teddy Rivera recognized the dire need for after school sports at their schools. They formed basketball squads and began coaching the kids on a volunteer basis. The NYC league has grown each year since and the 2016/17 season was the biggest and best yet. The program now boasts 240 schools and 330 teams throughout all of NYC serving over 6,600 public school boys and girls.

The newly formed USMSBA Committee now feels it is time for America to crown National Champions in Middle School Basketball each year and we are planning the Inaugural Championship for April of 2018 in Tampa, Florida. The National Tournament will be invitation only to begin with the first year and will be conducted over one weekend with teams not missing any school days to attend. The committee is actively working with several cities who have expressed a strong desire to participate and the format will be a Round Robin tournament with three games guaranteed. All cities competing will be on an equal footing as the tournament is only open to Championship School teams from each city. Cities will not be allowed to send AAU or All-Star squads as that would favor the large cities. Each attending team will provide documentation to prove their squads are from their school and meet all tournament rules for age and academic standards. Title Sponsors are being organized and the committee is in talks with national sports networks to broadcast the tournament. The committee will provide every city with the requirements well in advance of the first tournament and we cannot wait to crown our first National Champions in 2018!

The USMSBA will operate under the umbrella of the NYCMSBL 501c Non-Profit and will produce financial statements under this same organization after the first year.
